Lighted Schoolhouse

Tutorial Programs for high school students occur at our main location on the second floor of the YMCA.  High school students from throughout the county come to this location for help.  Most students request help with math, the sciences, and foreign languages.   Students who are involved with the Striders/YMCA Teen Center may also access help at the Lighted Schoolhouse study table. The open door between the Teen Center and Striders makes academic help readily available.  Students can receive academic help Monday through Thursday from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  We also offer workshops for the P.S.A.T. and S.A.T. college prep exams and assistance with their college search.

Elementary and Middle School Tutoring

Chautauqua Striders provides homework help sessions as part of the Elementary (Bush, Love, Ring, Rogers and Fletcher) and Middle (Jefferson and Washington) Schools After School Programs, Monday through Thursday from 3:00–6:00 p.m. We also offer tutoring at Persell Middle School from 3-4:30pm. Tutors assist students with homework assignments, basic reading and math skills, test preparation, and academic enrichment activities. These after school programs provide a safe, supervised alternative for parents.

SAFARI

A day long program at Jamestown High School that provides individual academic help and counseling to students on the Transition Team.  The Transition Team consists largely of ninth graders who were identified in middle school as potential drop outs or students who might get lost in the crowd.   Some students remain on the Team as tenth and eleventh graders.

Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena

Initially, this program was begun to assist figure skaters and youth hockey players waiting for ice time or for a sibling to finish his or her workout. Currently, elementary and middle school children from both the Jamestown Public Schools and surrounding school districts use this site. Two trained and qualified tutors are available Monday and Wednesday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. to assist students with homework. Tutoring is held downstairs in Community Room #2. A computer will be available for homework assignments and research projects.

Eastside YMCA

Striders currently provides two tutors three afternoons a week at the Eastside YMCA.  This is the third year of this project and we have seen an increase in student attendance.  Recently the YMCA asked Striders to be a partner in a grant submitted to the State Education Department.  This grant would support our work at the Eastside location.
