Outreach Programs Transition Team Each summer the Transition Team welcomes incoming 9th graders and their parents to Jamestown High School. Vicki Duba, Outreach Worker, visits the Team’s new students, providing information and answering students’ and parents’ questions about JHS. Patty Duncanson, School Counselor, focuses on scheduling and making sure that students are in classes that are appropriate for them. Freshman orientation provides the opportunity for incoming students to pick up their new schedules, tour JHS and practice finding their way around the building. Transition Team upperclassmen volunteer to be guides during the orientation. Providing these opportunities prior to the start of the school year helps ease the fears many students have regarding starting at JHS after being in the smaller middle school environment. The Team endeavors to minimize, or eliminate, the obstacles students face moving from 8th grade to JHS, as well as impediments they may encounter during their high school career.
The Transition Team keeps in close contact with both students and their parents throughout the year. There is an emphasis on good attendance and academics. The Team can be instrumental in alleviating situations that may occur outside of school thereby impacting school attendance and academic performance. Parents/guardians are encouraged to take an active part in their student’s education.
Due to the nature of the Transition Team concept, we are in a position to provide internal supports including, but not exclusively, tutoring, mentoring and career guidance. Relationships have been developed with outside agencies such as probation, mental health agencies, health center facilities, etc. and many referrals are made and followed up on. The Team specializes in listening to student and parental concerns or anxieties and supporting appropriate approaches to successfully resolving these individual issues.
Many events are held over the school year such as a monthly “brownie day” and holiday treats. Students are encouraged to join the staff and other students involved with the Transition Team in the offered activities. By doing so, positive relationships are developed and supported. High school can be a difficult time for some and the Transition Team is dedicated to making the experience a positive one for not only our students but their families as well. ProjectREACH Project REACH (Reaching Every Adult and Child in of Help) is our Family Outreach Program serving Jamestown’s Northside. Karla Brigiotta is the coordinator who works diligently to connect families and students with local community services that could improve the quality of their lives. Referrals into the program are received from school counselors and teachers, clergy, and other service agencies. Project REACH is available to assist in the following areas, just to name a few:
