ATHLETICS

Since its inception 30 years ago, Striders has encouraged young people to channel their energies into physical activity and to persevere in pursuit of their goals.

While the track and field team has produced athletes of national and Olympic caliber, the most notable achievements of the program can be measured by personal growth and an increase in self-esteem experienced by participants at every level.

Youth Development

This track and field program is designed for ages 12 and under. Children learn and develop basic athletic skills during June and July. Competitions are based on age and give the participants and their parents a solid introduction to the sport. Young athletes can choose the events in which they compete based on their individual interests and abilities.

Chautauqua Striders also encourages and promotes participation in the sport of track and field through USA Track and Field youth programs which are available to area school districts.
Programs like Hershey’s Track and Field Games and Strider Field Days foster physical fitness and provide a fun introduction to the sport.

The Track and Field Club

Nationally competitive, this program is intended for athletes 13 and up who participate in USA Track and Field events as well as regional, national, and international meets. In addition to honing their physical skills, athletes are mentored by coaches who help them gain self-confidence and motivate them to realize their individual potential. Former athletes attest to the impact the track and field team has made in their lives because it taught them the value of hard work, discipline, and education.

Championship Pedigree

Since the club was formed in 1979, Striders has had eighteen national champions.  Over another hundred (108) other Strider athletes have placed better than eighth and earned a medal in the national championships. The Club has also had several other athletes win state championships in New York. In the past four years alone seven Chautauqua Striders have won state championships.

Academic Excellence

The Club is a component of the Lighted Schoolhouse program which provides tutoring, guidance, and advocacy for youth as they strive to reach their fullest potential. Members of the Club are strongly encouraged to maintain a minimum of "B" in all of their academic subjects. For athletes in need of academic assistance, or for those below the minimum, tutoring is available.
Most of our seniors go on to pursue their education and attend college. We have a very active year for our seniors that includes SAT workshops, college visits, meetings with parents, and plenty of conversations with college admission directors and track coaches. Over half of our college bound graduates receive either an academic or athletic scholarship.
